One of the most common questions from people new to the NDIS is: what exactly does it cover? The answer is broader than most people expect. The NDIS funds supports across 14 registration groups — covering everything from daily personal care to specialist housing, employment, nursing, and community participation.

This guide explains every category in plain language, so you know exactly what you or your loved one can access.

How NDIS Funding Works

The NDIS funds “reasonable and necessary” supports that help people with disability live more independently and participate in community life. Your NDIS plan will specify which categories of support are funded and how much is allocated to each.

Funding is divided into three budget types:

The 14 NDIS Registration Groups — Explained

1. Assist-Personal Activities (0107) — Personal Care

Support with personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, meal preparation, continence management, and all essential daily activities. This is the most commonly funded support category.

2. Assist Personal Activities High (0104) — High Intensity Care

Complex personal care for participants with higher support needs, delivered by staff with specialist qualifications. Includes complex bowel care, wound management, PEG feeding, tracheostomy support, and catheter care.

3. Community Nursing Care (0114)

Registered nurses delivering clinical care in your home. Includes wound assessment, medication management, post-hospital discharge care, and clinical monitoring — giving you hospital-quality care without leaving home.

4. STA / MTA / ILO (0115) — Short-Term Accommodation (STA)

Time-limited accommodation support — STA, MTA and ILO for participants needing short or medium-term housing assistance. Includes overnight and 24-hour support.

5. Household Tasks (0120)

Help keeping your home clean, safe, and comfortable. Includes cleaning, laundry, meal planning, grocery shopping, and garden maintenance.

6. Development — Life Skills (0117)

Building everyday skills for greater independence — budgeting, cooking, communication, social skills, decision-making, and personal safety awareness.

7. Participate Community (0125)

Support to engage with community life — attending events, building friendships, accessing medical and therapy appointments, and participating in cultural and social activities.

8. Group/Centre Activities (0136)

Structured group programs and centre-based day activities. Includes art, fitness, skill-building programs, and peer connection opportunities in a supported environment.

9. Assist Access/Maintain Employment (0102)

Support to find, prepare for, and maintain meaningful employment. Includes job readiness training, resume support, interview preparation, workplace orientation, and on-the-job support.

10. Specialist Supported Employment (0133)

Supported employment within a structured workplace environment for participants who need ongoing specialist support to work. Includes task analysis, productivity support, and pathways to open employment.

11. Support Coordination (0132)

Expert help to navigate your NDIS plan, connect with the right providers, and ensure your funding works as hard as possible for you. Essential for anyone with a complex plan.

12. Assist — Life Stage, Transition (0106)

Support through major life changes — school to work, hospital to home, or moving to greater independence. Includes psychosocial recovery coaching and aged care to NDIS transitions.

13. Assist — Travel/Transport (0108)

Support to plan and use transport independently — getting to appointments, work, and community activities. Includes travel training, public transport support, and accompanying on journeys.

14. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) (0131)

Accessible, purpose-built housing for participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. Includes improved liveability, high physical support, and robust construction design categories.

Does the NDIS Cover Everything?

The NDIS does not fund supports that are the responsibility of other systems — like Medicare (medical treatment), education (school supports for children), or aged care. It also does not fund day-to-day living costs that all Australians pay for, like rent or food.

A good Support Coordinator can help you understand exactly what your plan covers and how to use every dollar effectively.
