Two of the most misunderstood terms in the NDIS are Support Coordination and Plan Management. People often confuse them — or assume they are the same thing. They are not, and understanding the difference can significantly affect how well your NDIS plan works for you.

The Short Answer

You can have one, both, or neither — depending on what is funded in your plan.

What Is Plan Management?

A Plan Manager is essentially a financial intermediary. They:

Plan management is funded separately in your NDIS plan — it does not come out of your other support budgets. If you want plan management, ask for it to be included at your planning meeting.

Who is it for? Anyone who wants flexibility in choosing providers (including unregistered ones) without having to manage the financial administration themselves.

What Is Support Coordination?

A Support Coordinator helps you understand and implement your NDIS plan. They:

Support Coordination is also separately funded in your plan. There are two levels — standard Support Coordination (0132) and Specialist Support Coordination for more complex needs.

Who is it for? People with complex plans, multiple providers, or significant support needs who want help navigating the NDIS system.

Can You Have Both?

Yes — and many participants do. A Plan Manager handles the money while a Support Coordinator handles the relationships and implementation. They work together, and having both is very common for participants with moderate to complex needs.

What About Agency Managed and Self Managed?

These are the other two plan management options:

Which Is Right for You?

Agency Managed Plan Managed Self Managed
Administration work None Low High
Use unregistered providers No Yes Yes
Provider choice Registered only Registered and unregistered Anyone
Extra cost to participant No No (separately funded) No
