What Is NDIS Plan Management?
NDIS plan management is a funded support that helps you manage the financial and administrative side of your NDIS plan. A registered plan manager pays your invoices, tracks your budget, and handles the paperwork — so you can focus on your supports and goals rather than the administration.
Plan management is separate from support coordination. A support coordinator helps you find and connect with service providers, while a plan manager handles the money side of things. Many NDIS participants in Ballarat use both.
The Three Ways to Manage Your NDIS Funds
The NDIS offers three options for managing your plan funding:
Agency-managed (NDIA-managed): The NDIA pays providers directly from your plan. You can only use registered NDIS providers. Less flexibility, less admin for you.
Plan-managed: A registered plan manager pays your invoices. You can use both registered and unregistered providers, giving you more choice. The plan manager is funded separately in your plan — it doesn’t come out of your support budget.
Self-managed: You pay invoices yourself and claim reimbursement from the NDIS portal. Maximum flexibility and access to any provider, but requires time, record-keeping, and financial literacy.
For most people in Ballarat, plan management strikes the best balance — you get the flexibility to choose any provider without the administrative burden of self-management.
What Does a Plan Manager Actually Do?
A plan manager takes care of all the financial administration of your NDIS plan, including receiving and paying invoices from your service providers, tracking how much funding you’ve used across each support category, providing monthly statements so you can see your spending, and advising you if any budget category is running low. They also liaise with the NDIA on your behalf for financial queries and help you understand what is and isn’t claimable under your plan.
How to Get Plan Management Added to Your NDIS Plan
If you don’t currently have plan management funding in your plan, you can request it at your next plan review or by contacting the NDIA for an unscheduled review. Plan management funding is added as a separate line item — it does not reduce your other support budgets. There is no disadvantage to having plan management funded in your plan.
To request it, simply tell your LAC or NDIS planner “I would like plan management” when discussing your plan. You do not need to justify it beyond stating your preference for the additional financial oversight and provider flexibility it provides.
Choosing a Plan Manager in Ballarat
